Brownies: Love Them but Hate the Guilt?

March 27, 2017

Brownies. Probably one of my favourite treats to bake and eat but they're not so good when it comes to health. Whilst traditional brownies are full of butter, sugar and chocolatey goodness (or not so chocolatey goodness when it comes to our waistline), they are probably one of the worst treats to eat.

I want to continue eating brownies but without feeling unhealthy after every bite. I have created a recipe that captures the yummy and moist flavour sensation of traditional brownies but without the calories and guilt. All you need is:

  • 1/2 cup of plain flour
  • 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder
  • 4 tablespoons of cacao powder, I used Naturya Organic Cacao Powder, available here
  • 1/2 cup of raw honey
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of reduced sugar chocolate hazelnut spread, I used JimJams Chocolate Hazelnut Spread, available here, which has 83% less sugar than the market leader.

Firstly, preheat the oven at 190 degrees Celsius.
Combine all dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl.
Add raw honey and mix.
Then add the eggs, one by one, and combine.
Add the milk, followed by the melted coconut oil and chocolate hazelnut spread.
Combine thoroughly then add to a lined baking tray and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Make sure the middle is slightly softer than the outside to keep the brownie moist.
Allow to cool, cut into squares and enjoy!

To make them a little sweeter as cacao powder is known for its bitterness, add some chocolate chips, preferably raw chocolate chips, to keep those calories and sugar down.

Have you given my recipe a go? If so what do you think and how could I make it better? Let me know in the comments below.
